PKD is the most common genetic condition that leads to CKD. It results in the formation of multiple cysts in the kidneys and sometimes in the liver. Over time, as more cysts form, the kidneys grow in size and their function is affected. PKD patients then develop CKD and can progress to ESRD, requiring kidney replacement therapy (either dialysis or transplant).
Patients may be asymptomatic until the late stages of PKD. Patients with family members with PKD should be screened.

Occasionally, patients with PKD may develop flank pain from a spontaneous bleed in a cyst or a cyst infection.
